In response to environmental violations, the Lagos Badagy Expressway’s famed Alaba International Market has been closed.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Honourable Commissioner of Lagos State’s Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, made this announcement on X.

Market closure as of today, Monday, October 23, 2023

Poor garbage disposal practises, nonpayment of trash fees, and serious violations of environmental sanitation laws led to the market’s closure, the Commissioner said.

Environmental concerns have led to the closure of yet another popular market, this time at Alaba International Market.

The government of Lagos State has been closing marketplaces for environmental violations for several weeks.

After careful evaluations, the markets are now open again.

Ladipo Market, Agbado Oke-Odo Market, Oyingbo Market, Alayabiagba Market, Alamutu (Ologede) Market, and parts of Tejuosho Market are only few of the places that have shut down.

Several warnings regarding the markets’ noncompliance with the state’s Environmental Protection Laws led to the authority’s decision to close them, according to Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the managing director of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA).

According to Gbadegesin, certain persons and marketplaces undercut LAWMA’s attempts to enhance the environment by not adhering to the laws and regulations.
