There have been threats of regional intervention against the coup leaders in Niger, so on Monday the ruling juntas in Mali and Burkina Faso sent delegations to Niamey to show solidarity with them.
A deadline set by ECOWAS, a regional bloc, for the Nigerien military to reinstate deposed president Mohamed Bazoum prompted the talks.
Foreign intervention in Niger would be interpreted as a “declaration of war” by Mali and Burkina Faso, they had previously warned.
Nearly two weeks have passed since the coup, in which mutinous soldiers arrested Bazoum and installed Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, the former head of the presidential guard, as president. Since then, tensions in the region have increased.
This show of unity follows a deadline set by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for the coup leaders to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum. If the regional bloc’s ultimatum isn’t complied with, military action may be considered.
After President Bazoum was detained by the presidential guard on July 26, Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani declared himself interim leader and took over as president of the caretaker National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland. There have been threats of regional intervention against the coup leaders in Niger, so on Monday the ruling juntas in Mali and Burkina Faso sent delegations to Niamey to show solidarity with them.
