Engr. Greg Ogbeifun, Chairman of the Benin Port Project, stated that the government is making steady progress with the development of the Benin Port Project, noting that the groundbreaking ceremony for the project will be performed in the third quarter of 2023. This information was provided by Engr. Greg Ogbeifun.
Ogbeifun made this revelation during a workshop that lasted for one day and was co-hosted by the Project Manager of the Benin Enterprise Park Project (BEPP). Other attendees included various representatives of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in the state. The purpose of the workshop was to harmonize the activities of the various government agencies that are working toward the success of both projects.
Ogbeifun stated, during his speech at the workshop that was held at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), “The reason for this workshop is community engagement as the project is domiciled in areas comprising a variety of communities.” They would experience both favorable and unfavorable effects as a result. When developing the projects, the communities that will be affected need to be involved in order to ensure cooperation that is smooth and unbroken, which will ultimately lead to the success of the projects.
“We want it to be clear to the communities that they are recognized and that the government cares for them,” the spokesperson said. This workshop is necessary for the various MDAs and ministries in order for them to examine the content of the projects and the participation of the community in order for them to benefit in the areas of health, infrastructure, education, roads, and water, amongst other areas. We strongly encourage them to get involved and take ownership of the project.
He continued by saying, “The groundbreaking ceremony for the Benin River Port Project ought to take place this year, possibly as soon as August of this year.” The project will be divided into two phases, and our current estimates place the total amount of time needed to finish it as a port somewhere between 24 and 36 months.
Engr. Emmanuel Igbinaduwa, the Head of Benin Enterprise Park, stated that the BEPP is a massive project that sits on 997 hectares of land and is comprised of commercial, residential, and manufacturing concerns.
He made the following observation: “This workshop is to bring together all of the stakeholders for a conversation that will help own, plan, and deliver on this project without any hiccups.” The Edo State Government wants to execute this project and get it down, and they do not want it to be an abandoned project, and all stakeholders must run seamlessly, ensuring that the project is finished within the scope of the project, within the budget, and within the schedule.
In addition, while praising the governor, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Orientation, Barr. Solomon Imohiosen, stated that “Edo is one of the States that will soon have a lot of shipping activities when these enormous projects are completed.” These projects will leave a lasting legacy for the State because no other State in Nigeria has ever undertaken projects of this nature. Our responsibility as a ministry is to educate the general public about the positive outcomes of the various projects.
