Wanted cultist nabbed for terrorising Osun community
A suspected cultist, Fatai Abass, said to have been on the watch list of Osun State Police Command for over a year has been arrested.
Abass was reportedly arrested on Saturday at Oke Baale Area of Osogbo, the state capital by the operatives of the command’s Anti-Cultism Squad, following a tip-off.
23-year-old Abass, linked to various deadly clashes among rival cult groups in Osun, was said to have, at different times in the past, attacked people of Oke Baale, School Road, Oke Ayepe, Idi Omo, Ilesa Garage and Oke Ijetu areas -all within Osogbo metropolis.
A reliable security source, who preferred to remain anonymous, during a chat with our correspondent said Abass, also known as ‘Gbefawo’ was “trailed for months without success until about 5.30pm on Saturday when operatives apprehended him.
“He was apprehended by the operatives of the anti-cultism squad around Oke Baale. He is a popular, feared cultist around here. A locally-made pistol and one live cartridge were recovered from him. He also confessed to multiple killings that had occurred in Osogbo.”
When contacted for confirmation on Sunday, the spokesperson for the state police command, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed the arrest.
Opalola, who declared that the command would not allow criminals the space to operate in the state, said, “Yes, he (Abass) was arrested. Investigation will continue to reveal others involved in the crime.”
