Brighton & Hove Albion moved within two points of the Premier League leaders and boosted their hopes of finishing in the division’s top four with a historic 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City.
It was the Seagulls who secured all three points on Saturday through a winner by Swedish midfielder Yasin Ayari, delivering Manchester City their second successive league loss.
The goal after a defensive mix-up involving City’s Matheus Nunes, whose failure to deal with a low cross enabled the ball to fall to Ayari’s path, who coolly converted from close range.
Brighton took the lead early on but had to endure much of pressure from the hosts, especially in the second half, as City pushed for an equaliser.
Brighton goalie Bart Verbruggen was a key reason why they managed to stay in front, with critical stops to deny City’s attacking players.
Manchester City had 21 efforts in the match, with only six reaching the target. But they could not pierce Brighton’s defence.
The hosts also squandered a late chance when Nico O’Reilly’s shot toward goal failed to be converted, meaning Brighton left Manchester with a memorable triumph.
The result represents Brighton’s first ever Premier League away win at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium, ending an ignominious record against the reigning English football powers in their 18th attempt.
It is also a strong reaction from Fabian Hürzeler’s team after their Carabao Cup loss to City on penalties earlier in the week.
The victory took Brighton to 19 points from nine games, third in the Premier League table, only two points behind Manchester City and Arsenal who both have 21 points.
Manchester City are top for now but Arsenal may overtake them if they take something from their game with Liverpool on Sunday.
After their previous league match, City suffered a troubling loss. Questions about their recent play, despite their great start to the campaign, were raised.
City’s assault failed to make the most of their opportunities and Erling Haaland, who had scored in seven straight Premier League games, could not find the net.
For Brighton, meanwhile, it is a result they will take heart from, and one that continues to establish their burgeoning status as genuine contenders for a place in the higher reaches of the table.
With the campaign still in its infancy, their triumph at the Etihad may prove to be one of their defining results of the season.
