The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has concluded the drafting phase of its assignment and has formally submitted the draft National Policing Bill (2026) along with twenty-nine (29) consequential amendment bills to the Federal Ministry of Justice for legislative drafting scrutiny and validation.
Channels TV reported that the submission was given to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice on the 19th of October, 2026 in line with the work plan of the Working Group.
The ministry’s examination will find that the measures are in keeping with the rules and conventions for legislative writing and do not contradict current laws.
The validated draft bills are scheduled to be returned to the Working Group by the Ministry of Justice on or by Friday, 30th October 2026. “Final consideration will then be given by the Working Group to the validated bills and presented to Mr President, thereby concluding its mandate,” the Chairman, Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, said in a statement yesterday.
The proposed National Policing Bill will provide the constitutional and legislative basis for a dual policing structure, a Federal Police Service and State Police Services.
Gbajabiamila stated, “The Working Group remains committed to a rigorous and transparent process that will deliver a comprehensive legislative proposal for the consideration of the President and onwards transmission to the National Assembly.
The work on preparing the National Policing Bill is going on side-by-side with the ongoing consideration of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026 by the States Houses of Assembly, which has to be completed before the Bill is transmitted to the National Assembly, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu said.
