US President Donald Trump today blamed major student protests in France on “mass migration” and Islam, pushing his worldwide right-wing narrative ahead of challenging midterm elections back home.
“What is happening in France is nothing short of mass migration out of control. “This isn’t about schools, this is about Islam wanting to take over a once great Country!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Since late September, French students have blocked doors to hundreds of high schools around the country, demanding better conditions in protests that have devolved into intermittent skirmishes with security officers.
On the streets of France today, a quarter of a million demonstrators.
But Trump and his administration have for a long time blamed migration for societal problems in Europe, urging Europe to close its borders and mimicking far-right parties in warning of what they term civilisational decay.
Leading figures in Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement have been leveraging the French protests to hammer home points about immigration ahead of the US midterm elections next month.
MAGA broadcasters have regularly shared recordings of the French violence, with Trump ally Glenn Beck declaring yesterday that the “riots in France are a clear warning to the rest of the West.”
Republicans are leaning toward migration and anti-transgender rhetoric, facing fears that Trump’s unpopularity and his Iran war could cost them control of Congress.
