“I feel so happy that Ronaldo decided to leave the Portugal national team camp.
For days the place has not felt like a team. Every drill stopped if he was unhappy, and younger players were afraid to take a shot or speak in the meeting in case it crossed him.
I respect what he has done for this country, but happiness is the right word for how I feel now, because the camp can breathe again.
We can train without looking over our shoulder. The coaches can pick the side on form, not on fear of a reaction.
I can talk to the group as a captain of the session, not as someone managing one man’s mood. The jokes are back after training. People are eating together. That matters more than any headline.
I am not celebrating a teammate walking out. I am happy that the decision was made and that we no longer have to pretend everything is fine.
Portugal is bigger than one player. If he has chosen to go, we should use the quiet to work, to be honest with each other, and to prepare for the next match without the weight that has been sitting on this camp.”
