Former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has spoken on the silence of some of his former colleagues, friends and acquaintances to his current situation, saying he bears no grudge toward those who have chosen to abscond from him.
El-Rufai said in a statement titled, “My Relationships and the Aftermath” that he had received concerns concerning the seeming quiet of persons he had publicly backed or closely connected with in the past.
“My Islamic faith, my upbringing in Arewa, my personal values and conscience have guided my decision to stand by people and causes throughout my life, Daily Trust reported.
“I have stood by people and causes that I believed in over the years, sometimes in difficult circumstances and at some personal cost,” he stated.
He said he did not act in hopes of acclaim, thanks or a return favour, but because he felt it was the proper thing to do.
El-Rufai said people he had supported were now at liberty to decide for themselves as circumstances had changed.
Some, he said, may speak in his defence, but others may remain quiet, or even end ties they had.
“They have their reasons and I don’t want to judge their reasons because they’re different from what many or even I might have expected,” he said.
“The difficult situations reveal the character of relationships,” the former governor remarked, adding that the experience over the previous few months may compel him to re-evaluate some connections.
“There’s a way adversity can shine a spotlight on relationships,” he said, adding that he’d learned things throughout the tough time that may lead him to “quietly and without regret” re-examine some relationships and what people who look up to them expect from them.
“But such a re-evaluation should not be seen as a condemnation or a reproach,” he stressed.
El-Rufai said he has no regrets about supporting people or causes when he thought it was the right thing to do.
“I don’t resent anyone who doesn’t choose to do the same for me,” he stated.
He said he would rather be true to the values that had governed his conduct than have the acts of others affect the principles.
El-Rufai claimed he was not seeking revenge or payback on any perceived injustice, ingratitude or injury done to him.
“Ultimate accountability is with Almighty Allah and I leave that judgement to Him in this world and in the Hereafter,” he added.
And he finished by noting that in the end everyone would have to live with the decisions they made and posterity will make its own judgement.
“My only concern is to be in peace with my conscience and above all with Almighty Allah”, he remarked.
El-Rufai who is accusing the Tinubu administration of witchhunt has been in custody for 220 days.
