A new political mobilisation platform, “Tinubu Must Go”, has developed ahead of the 2027 general election, with its promoters asking on opposition parties to unify behind one presidential candidate to confront President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. ExecutiveBranch
According to one of its organisers, Barrister Hamza Nuhu Dantani, the movement is being led by activists unsatisfied with the direction of the federal government and seeking to mobilise Nigerians around their opposition to Tinubu’s ambition for another term, Daily Trust reported.
Dantani, a private legal practitioner, divulged this in an interview with a Northern-based blog, “Arewa Updates” adding that the campaign was created as a public enlightenment platform rather than a conventional political organization.
“There is no formal structure of offices and political positions in the group,” he said, describing its approach as a grassroots chain of mobilisation in which individuals are encouraged to teach others about the campaign’s objectives.
Our purpose is to make the people aware. It is about one individual educating another and creating public awareness before the 2027 election,” Dantani said.
He said the campaign’s immediate political purpose was to generate significant public opposition to Tinubu’s re-election and to convince other political parties to set aside their differences and forge a unified agenda.
Dantani said the administration has grossly failed to meet its campaign promises, adding that less than five per cent of the promises made by the President have been realised.
He was critical of the elimination of the petrol subsidy, which was one of the reasons he cited for the activists’ decision to undertake a wider agitation against the administration.
The policy, Dantani said, has contributed to the economic hardship experienced by millions of Nigerians and remains one of the key issues fuelling the campaign.
He also accused the administration of putting undue pressure on the opposition and government critics and of activities that, in his view, raised questions about democratic governance.
He said the action of the federal government in Rivers State in 2025, including the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara during the period of emergency rule, was an example of what he termed as steps inconsistent with democratic values. administration
But the administration has justified the intervention on the grounds of the protracted political instability and worsening of governance in the state.
The campaign, which is unequivocally opposed to Tinubu’s return to office, has not adopted or backed any presidential candidate for 2027.
On the candidate the group wants to endorse, Dantani said no decision had been taken on that, but said he hoped that opposition groups would agree on a single candidate that could face Tinubu in the polls.
“We have not selected any candidate for the time being,” he added, adding that the campaign would prefer opposition parties to unite rather than split their support among many presidential hopefuls.
