The Super Falcons were knocked out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1-0 defeat to rivals Cameroon in a quarter-final encounter yesterday.

Myriam Nyadjou struck a free-kick to give Cameroon a surprising 1-0 quarter-final victory against reigning champions Nigeria yesterday in Casablanca.
The 19-year-old found the net after 19 minutes, smashing a soaring shot beyond the outstretched fingertips of custodian Chiamaka Nnadozie and into the corner of the net.
It was Nyadjou’s first goal of the tournament and sealed Cameroon a semi-final meeting with hosts Morocco in Rabat on Wednesday and a berth at the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
Record 10-time WAFCON winners Nigeria looked for an equaliser in the dying stages but were denied on several occasions by spectacular saves from Michaely Bihina.
The Super Falcons came closest to levelling the scores in the third minute of additional time when Esther Okoronkwo won the race for possession with Bihina but her effort drifted wide of the far post.
Nigeria, who introduced six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala just before the miss, was not fit to start.
But the Saudi-based striker failed to make an impression as Cameroon comfortably saw out the closing few minutes for only their second victory over Nigeria in 14 WAFCON matches.
When the Namibian referee blew the final whistle the Cameroon replacements and coaches ran onto the pitch to hug the Indomitable Lionesses.
In Rabat later, debutants and giant killers Malawi take on three-time runners-up Ghana, with the winners facing Algeria in the other semi-final.
It will be the first time Nigeria does not qualify for the World Cup thru the play-offs since the tournament was introduced in 1991. GeographicReference
Nigeria’s Super Falcons made it to the last-16 stage of the last World Cup in Australia but lost to England on penalties. They also beat Cameroon to earn a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
