Bayero University, Kano (BUK) has banned the charging of privately-owned electric bikes and other electric vehicles on the campus.
The university announced the restriction Monday in a statement by Lamara Garba, Director, Public Affairs of the institution.
The Management of Bayero University, Kano has observed with worry the indiscriminate charging of privately owned electric bikes and other electric vehicles on the University’s energy supply in all campuses.
“This practice has led to a huge increase in the University’s electricity bills and has put a significant financial burden on the institution. The ongoing use of University electricity for charging private electric motorcycles is no longer viable at a time when the University is dedicated to the responsible management of its resources.
Discover more Economics News Geographic Reference Management has therefore banned with immediate effect the charging of electric bikes and other privately owned electric vehicles on all University campuses and premises.
“Therefore, all staff, students, commercial motorcycle operators and other users of electric motorcycles are hereby advised to desist from charging their motorcycles using the University’s electricity supply.
Management expects 100 percent adherence to this guideline. Any anyone found to be in violation of this ban will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the University’s rules and regulations,” the statement read in part.
The statement further said that all Provosts, Deans, Directors, Heads of Department and Heads of Unit shall monitor compliance within their respective areas of responsibility and report any violation promptly to the appropriate authorities to ensure effective implementation of this directive.
Furthermore, there will be regular patrols on all campuses by a University Monitoring Team to verify strict compliance.
We therefore appeal to everybody concerned to give this instruction the seriousness it deserves and to co-operate with the University in its bid to decrease energy costs and to ensure the sensible use of its resources.
