President Bola Tinubu has refuted claims of election intimidation, stating that the Independent National election Commission (INEC) is an impartial umpire that has never intimidated any political actor.
The President revealed this on Tuesday when he received the members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Led by the President of the conference, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, the bishops urged Tinubu to safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process by providing a level playing field for all political parties, adequately funding INEC and supporting elections that truly reflect the will of the electorate.
Tinubu denied allegations of political meddling in the voting process, stating that INEC has fulfilled its duties without intimidation.
The President said, “INEC has never intimidated anybody. Many political opponents are only ‘afraid of their own shadows’.
Tinubu renewed his administration’s commitment to develop democratic institutions and uphold the sanctity of Nigeria’s election system.
Apart from electoral issues, the meeting also addressed issues on the country’s economy, security, education and religious freedom with both sides exchanging ideas on national growth and governance.
The meeting was one of the series of discussions the Presidency has held with significant religious groups on problems concerning the nation.
