The Bauchi State Police Command has detained a 20-year-old woman, Rabi Abubakar, for reportedly dumping hot water on her pregnant co-wife during a domestic fight, an incident that resulted in the death of the victim’s newborn baby.
The incident occurred in Daba Village, Bauchi Local Government Area on the morning of July 17, 2026 around 7:30 a.m. The woman allegedly splashed hot water on her co-wife, 30, in a domestic fight, police said.
The person got serious burns and was sent to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi for treatment. when in medical treatment and when very pregnant, she gave birth to a baby boy on July 19. The baby was badly burnt and died that day.
Police said the mother was now in stable condition and responding to treatment.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the occurrence and stated the case was reported to the police on July 22 by the officer in charge of Dabe Police Outstation in Soro Division. “Police operatives immediately went to the scene after receiving the report,” Habib said. The suspect was later found and detained and in preliminary interrogation she admitted voluntarily to the commission of the act.
The suspect is in police custody and the matter will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution, the police spokesperson said.
The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, denounced the alleged attack, saying it was unacceptable. “The Command will ensure diligent investigation and prosecution of the matter in accordance with the law,” he stated.
