Ten individuals have been detained by the Benue State Police Command in relation to the murders of Ardo Risku Mohammed, the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), and Yakubu Isa, his accomplice.
The arrests came after security personnel acted on reliable information during a well-planned tactical operation in Otukpo Local Government Area early on Saturday, June 27.
The arrests were regarded as a significant advancement in the investigation into the double murder by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Udeme Edet, who confirmed the news in a statement.
Titus Thyodenda (25), Utibe Sam (20), Owoicho Ameh (18), Sunday Useni (21), Sunday Ogbanje (46), Daniel Raphael (23), Adokole John (24), Samuel Ogazi (32), Agbo Daniel (25), and Onazi James (30) are the suspects.
The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, lauded the promptness and professionalism of the police participating in the operation and assured the locals that anyone found guilty would be prosecuted.
He revealed that investigations are still ongoing and hinted that when investigators step up their attempts to capture further suspects connected to the incident, more arrests might be made.
On Friday, while returning from a peace meeting called by the Divisional Police Officer in Idekpa, Mohammed and Isa were assassinated by gunmen in the Okudu neighbourhood.
In some areas of Benue State, where attacks and conflicts between communities continue to be major problems, the tragedy raised fresh worries about security.
The police commissioner urged locals to maintain composure and aid security personnel by offering reliable information that could support the current investigation.
He reiterated the command’s dedication to protecting people and property throughout the state and making sure the killers are held accountable.
