The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to quit after massive failure.
This came after the United Kingdom Prime Minister, Kier Starmer, revealed plans to quit amid growing public anger over a stagnating economy, a deteriorating cost-of-living crisis and an apparent failure to deliver on major election promises, according to The Guardian.
In a statement yesterday, Obi recalled that in 2015, Tinubu had called for the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan over the economic hardship and insecurity facing Nigerians.
President Jonathan was called on to resign immediately during the Chibok school kidnappingincident, with the administration being accused of failing in its most basic obligation to protect lives.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu made a number of promises during the 2023 election campaign, among them improved electricity supply. “He also challenged the electorate not to vote for him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those commitments – especially in providing stable power, fighting corruption and improving the welfare of Nigerians,” Obi stated.
The NDC candidate reminded Nigerians that those conditions have worsened and pointed out that electricity supply is still erratic, insecurity has worsened in many regions including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened instead of easing.
Other key sectors such as security, infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption initiatives have also suffered setbacks, reflecting similar worries. “We are in the worst possible condition,” he continued.
He then asked for the resignation of the president, saying that such a move would assist enthrone a political culture built in accountability and responsibility rather than further entrenching impunity. “It would also send a strong message that public office is a sacred trust, not an entitlement, and help build a society where future leaders understand that failure has consequences,” he said. “Ending the culture of impunity is the only way we can secure a better future for the society our children will inherit in a New Nigeria that is possible,” he stated.
