President Donald Trump has directed that Nigerians and other nationalities looking for green cards should return to their home countries to apply for the procedure save in unusual situations.
Trump announced the new immigration directives Friday.
The strategy was intended to return to what US immigration law was originally intended to do, US Citizenship and Immigration Services said.
According to the statement, immigrants seeking adjustment of status would henceforth be obliged to complete their residency petitions through US consular operations abroad under the supervision of the United States Department of State.
“We are restoring the original intent of the law to ensure aliens properly navigate our nation’s immigration system,” the statement said.
“In the future, an alien who is in the United States temporarily and wants a Green Card must go back to their home country to apply, except in extraordinary circumstances.”
