The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) led by Comrade Uchenna Madu has announced the 30th of May 2026 as the Biafra Day Celebration and has asked its followers to sit at home on that day.
It said the day also celebrated the 59th year anniversary of Biafra proclamation by General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, reports The Guardian.
MASSOB National Director of Information, Edeson Samuel, said it would be a day of sober reflection across Biafraland and that all markets, public/private automobile parks, schools, banks and other public business premises would be shut from 6am to 4pm on May 30, 2026.
The statement said the closing of the public places and services on May 30, 2026 “are marks of honour, respect and patriotism to our father land.
It is a show of respect and acknowledgment of the innumerable sacrifices and prices our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters paid for Biafra during the three years war of extermination against Biafra by the British backed Nigeria, it added.
MASSOB also stated it is utilizing the Biafra declaration anniversary to express solidarity to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, unfairly imprisoned for the sake of Biafra and repeated its call for his immediate release.
“The Biafra struggle is unstoppable and would continue fighting till it is restored,” it stated.
MASSOB stated the appeal for stay at home has been a yearly and recalling methods and steps for effective civil disobedience ceremonial practice.
“MASSOB wants the people of Biafra to know that this exercise has always been the life wire of the Biafran struggle which boomed the potency and acceptability of the non violence Biafra self determination struggle.
“The demand for closure of Markets, public/private motor parks, schools and other public business premises is a one day mandatory exercise that Biafrans shall stand, it is a mark of respect and love for our fatherland.
The exercise of staying at home shall not be made compulsory, pressured or imposed on Biafrans.
“It said that MASSOB and other pro Biafra agitators will not molest, compel or intimidate anybody to observe the stay at home exercise as all our members shall stay indoors in observance of the great day of Biafra”. It said that there will be no physical protest on that day.
