The Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has stated conflicts among opposition political figures will make it easy for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to retain power in the 2027 general elections.
Oshiomhole speaking on Channels TV last night stated the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has become the APC’s “best campaign manager” for his purported attacks on another opposition leader, Peter Obi.
He said Obi and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, have also been assaulting each other, a scenario the former Edo State governor feels will work in the APC’s benefit in 2027.
“Do you mean APC would be worried about which of the parties now…ADC? I saw Atiku. “Atiku is our best campaign manager right now because he is attacking Obi. I see Obi attacking Amaechi. “I saw Amaechi saying that Obi is a regional player, Atiku is a regional player and he is the only national player, but he didn’t tell us what his ward unit looks like,” Oshiomhole added.
The lawmaker was sure that, regardless of the alliance intentions, the opposition will be crushed in the 2027 elections.
He urged opposition leaders to tell Nigerians what they would do differently from the policies being implemented by President Bola Tinubu.
‘So the opposition can have its dreams but they will be beaten flat because nobody believes them. They have to tell us what new policies they are going to reverse, whether it is reversing taxation, reversing the removal of fuel subsidies, student loans or reversing any of those bold decisions President Tinubu has taken,” he said.
He said that the only thing that united opposition politicians was their lust for power.
Tinubu, he said, had gone into difficult terrain to re-engineer the Nigerian economy through hard policy decisions.
Nigeria’s political scene is slowly heating up for the 2027 general elections as opposition leaders prepare to face President Tinubu.
Atiku Abubakar, who came second in the just concluded 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is likely to play significant roles ahead of 2027. Others include Peter Obi of the Labour Party who came third, Rabiu Kwankwaso who came fourth, and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
The opposition figures had earlier decided to join together under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to strengthen their chances against the APC and Tinubu.
But Obi and Kwankwaso then decamped to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) to pursue their political ambition claiming the various litigations surrounding the ADC as the cause for their leaving.
Atiku and Amaechi are still in the ADC and while the party primaries are about to be held, it is not yet obvious who the opposition parties would eventually present to Tinubu.
Meanwhile, APC has exempted President Bola Tinubu from the screening ahead of the 2027 elections.
APC spokesman Felix Morka said the decision was taken by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at its 188th meeting on Wednesday.
Morka claimed the NWC “found him to have been properly screened in accordance with the Constitution of the Party for the purpose of contesting in the forthcoming primary elections.”
