Three individuals died in a stampede at a convocation party in Ikere-Ekiti. The party was for students of the state-owned Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science, and Technology.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the event and said that two students from BOUESTI and a staff member from a popular hotel in Ikere Ekiti were among the victims, according to Daily Independent.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, stated in a statement that the corpses of the dead have been sent to the morgue for an examination.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, has ordered a full investigation into the incident that took place today, April 19, 2026, at 1:00 a.m. at the Emirate Hotel in Ikere-Ekiti. It resulted in the deaths of a hotel employee and two students from Bamidele Olumiluwa University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere-Ekiti (BOUESTI).
“A preliminary investigation showed that the students chose to go to the hotel for a party after their graduation on April 18, 2028. Two students who have not yet been named got into a fight during the party, which lasted till the next day.
“Others nearby chose to flee the hotel, leading to a stampede that killed three people.
“The CP, while feeling sorry for the victims’ family and friends, asks for calm because nothing will be left unturned in the investigation of the sad event.”
Reports from people who were there say that the kids were having a great time until things got out of hand after some people disagreed.
People say that things got out of hand when people started using sharp objects, which made partygoers worry.
Sources said that the threat of immediate danger caused people to hurry for shelter, which led to a stampede within the building.
Several people were claimed to have fallen and been trampled on in the chaos that ensued.
“Sadly, three people died in the ensuing chaos,” a source said.
“Two of the victims died in the stampede, and another was said to have been attacked during the violence.” One of the people who died was a recent graduate who had gone to the convocation ceremony that day.
Reports that two of the dead were siblings have made the tragedy even worse, leaving their family and the whole neighborhood in great sadness.
