Police in India used tear gas on Monday to break up a protest by manufacturing workers in Noida. The protests were about pay and working conditions, but they turned violent.
The protests, which have been going on for four days, saw people set cars on fire, damage property, and fight with police in the industrial area near New Delhi. Officials said they used “minimum force” to bring things back to normal when things got worse.
Workers had been unhappy for a long time, and the protests were fueled by demands for increased wages, set hours, and fair pay for overtime. A lot of workers complain that their pay hasn’t kept up with the rising cost of living.
Eyewitness videos revealed chaotic situations in certain parts of Noida, with cars on fire, masses throwing stones, and a lot of riot police trying to keep things under control.
It is said that the violence got worse in important industrial areas like Phase 2 and Sector 60, where hundreds of workers gathered, stopped highways, and damaged infrastructure. The commotion also caused big problems with traffic, which left people stuck for hours.
Officials stated the protests were part of a larger wave of labor dissatisfaction in India. Rising costs around the world and recent differences in wages between states are two reasons for this. Authorities recently agreed to a big minimum wage rise in Haryana, which is next door to Noida. This made things even more tense in Noida.
Local officials have asked people to stay calm and told workers to talk to each other. They also said that anybody who caused violence would face legal punishment. Security has been stepped up in all the impacted regions, and work is still going on to make things more stable.
