Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has promised to work closely with the National Assembly to make sure that Nigeria has a fair, credible, and open electoral process.
INEC said yesterday that Prof. Amupitan made the promise while speaking to attendees at the 56th Annual National Conference of the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT) at the Federal University of Lokoja. He was also honored for his dedication and service.
The INEC Chairman added that the Commission would work closely with lawmakers to make sure that changes to the Electoral Act take into account what has been learned from past elections and boost public trust in the process, according to Channels TV.
Amupitan added, “I will start waiting to join the National Assembly to make sure that we have a fair electoral process and laws that you, I, and all Nigerians can be proud of.”
He stressed that a viable voting system needs a well-structured legal framework.
He said, “Law is not just a set of rules; it is the basis on which societies build their progress.”
Amupitan also said that one of the goals of the continuing reform is to cut down on election-related lawsuits by making sure that every step is fair and open.
He asked for a procedure that reflects the desire of the people and said, “Let’s not see electoral petitions in court.”
The Federal University of Lokoja gave the INEC chairman a plaque to thank him for his “dedication, hard work, and inspiration to many.”
He took the opportunity to ask the academic community to keep supporting efforts to make Nigeria’s democracy stronger.
President Bola Tinubu swore in Amupitan as the Chairman of INEC on October 23.
The Senate approved his appointment a week before the president swore him in. The screening session took place on October 16.
After Professor Mahmood Yakubu left, Tinubu hired Amupitan to fill the empty position. From 2015 to October 2025, Yakubu was in charge.
