David Adeleke, a Nigerian Afrobeats singer known as Davido, has made history by being the first artist to sell out the 30,000-seat Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Davido played in the state on Sunday as part of his ongoing 5ive Tour in Nigeria.
According to Guardian Life, the event, which had a huge turnout of supporters, was his first significant home performance after the tour’s successful North American phase.
At a pre-concert reception hosted by Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Davido said that Akwa Ibom was chosen to host the first part of the tour because of the quality of its facilities and its growing reputation for hosting big entertainment events.
He noted that starting the tour in Uyo was a planned choice based on what the state had to offer.
Davido remarked, “When we were looking around Africa, five places came to mind, and Akwa Ibom was at the top of the list.” People are flying in from other states that don’t have this kind of place.
“I’m excited; the Akwa Ibom tour is the best of its kind.” We already went on a trip of the US, which was a big success. Now we’re looking for a suitable spot to stay in Africa, and Akwa Ibom is one of the destinations we identified.
“We’re starting here because you have a standard facility. We will keep doing the other states as time goes on. I’m simply glad the stadium is already full, so let’s get ready and close it down.
Davido also called the state “beautiful” and said that if additional states had the same degree of infrastructure, it would be easy to travel around the country.
Senate President Akpabio thanked Governor Eno for his leadership and support of youth development in his speech.
He said that Davido’s influence has helped emerging talents grow and told him to take Akwa Ibom’s burgeoning stars with him as he continues his tour in and out of Nigeria.
Governor Eno commended Davido for encouraging young Nigerians with his songs and hard work. He said that the singer’s success is proof of what hard work can do.
He responded, “Thank you for being an inspiration to the younger generation.” You have reached the top of your career, and it is an example to young people that they can do what they set their minds to.
“We are a state that is friendly to young people and wants to help them develop their skills.” Thank you for sharing the stage with some of our local performers. They look up to you and hope to be like you one day.
Davido’s 5ive Tour will go on in Yola, Enugu, and Ibadan, and it will end in Lagos on December 25.
