A group of opposition organizations in Nigeria has warned Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, and Atiku Abubakar, the country’s former vice president, that they must cooperate in order to prevent President Bola Tinubu from receiving an easy second term in office in the 2027 general election.
According to Vanguard, this advise was given yesterday at a gathering in Abuja by a coalition of civil society groups, including the Save Democracy Mega Alliance (SDMA) and the Civil Societies Alliance, among others.
Among those who signed the communiqué issued following the meeting was SDMA’s South South Coordinator Tony Akeni, who elaborated on how the group decided that Atiku and Obi would need to work together in 2027 if they wanted to make an impression.
The urgent purpose of emancipating our country through the vote in 2027 can be achieved, according to Akeni, if stakeholders of our opposition political parties and electorates make the proper judgments.
“On the other hand, our nation will face incalculable costs if progressive opposition leaders make poor judgments and fail to win the presidency in 2027.
Thankfully, Nigeria has two highly accomplished political opponents running for president in 2027, and they are both more than qualified to lead our country back to its former glory.
The current leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Labour Party, respectively, are His Excellency Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and His Excellency Peter Obi, respectively.
“Regrettably, though, irrefutable evidence and the results of a lengthy investigation have shown two crippling realities that will prevent Atiku or Peter Obi from becoming the Nigerian president in 2027, should either of them make the incorrect choices.
“The second reality is that the current APC administration has deliberately and scientifically set up nearly impossible hurdles to the holding of free and fair elections that would allow either Peter Obi, running for president from a different political party, or Atiku, running in a separate party ballot, to have any chance of winning the 2027 presidential election.”
He claims that investigations have revealed that the present government is plotting to ensure that neither Atiku nor Peter Obi would be elected president in 2027.
He pointed out that these steps will only be successful if “they (Atiku and Obi), make the fatal, historically regrettable and irredeemable mistake of contesting the 2027 presidential election on the platforms of two separate or competing political parties.”
