Ivory Coast, the hosts of the Africa Cup of Nations, announced today that they fired head coach Jean-Louis Gasset halfway through the competition.

The FIF said in a statement that “the contracts of coach Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated due to insufficient results.”

In their final Group A match on Monday, Equatorial Guinea humiliated the Ivorians 4-0, according to AFP.

The two-time winners must perform well in their final group games on Wednesday in order to advance to the knockout stage as one of the top four third-place teams.

In the nine previous tournament editions, Ivory Coast has only once failed to advance past the group stage, that being in 2017.
