Yesterday, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State made his return to the North-West state to a raucous reception.

According to Channels TV, Governor Yusuf had been out of the state due to the legal dispute surrounding his job.

The Court of Appeal removed him from his position as Kano’s leader and proclaimed Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the election’s victor in March 2023. However, he contested the development, and the Supreme Court declined to make a decision.

However, a sizable gathering flocked to the street yesterday to greet Governor Abba’s return.

The supporters of the leader who rode to power under the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) chanted solidarity songs while donning the iconic red clothing of the Kwankwasiya movement. A few of them

carried banners and posters with the slogans “Justice for Kano” and “Abba is our Choice” as they followed the governor’s motorcade.

The development caused the area’s movement to stall. Moving from Malam Aminu Kano International Airport to Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, Kofar Mata, took him several hours.

Some of the supporters posted pictures and videos of themselves extending a warm welcome to Governor Abba on social media. One of the most popular sayings of the day was “Kano is Red,” a reference to the colour of the Kwankwasiya movement.

At Sani Abacha Stadium, Governor Abba officially opened the training programme for 2,600 corporate security officers.

His homecoming came weeks after the November 13 Court of Appeal verdict that upheld the judgement of the tribunal. In its ruling, the Appeal Court agreed with the judgement of the tribunal, ruling that the fielding of Abba was in breach of the Electoral Law as he was not qualified to contest that election.

In September, the tribunal nullified the victory of Yusuf, the candidate of the NNPP in the March 18 governorship election. It thus affirmed Gawuna as the duly elected governor of Kano
