Auwalu Salisu, a 22-year-old tricycle driver, returned N15 million to the Chadian owner after the owner left it in his vehicle. He claims that some of his friends called him crazy for returning the money and told him he had blown his one and only chance to get rich.
The incident, which took place over the weekend, has garnered attention from people with opposing viewpoints, as reported by Daily Trust.
While the majority of people are praising the young man for his honesty, some of his friends have criticised him for being dishonest.
After dropping off his passengers in Yankaba, Salisu found the cash, in the form of CFA and Naira, inside his tricycle. Salisu was shocked, but he didn’t know the exact amount, so he ran back to his mum.
Salisu and his family are struggling financially, but they refused to use the money to buy him a tricycle. His mum instead had him look for the owner, and he eventually tracked him down through radio ads.
The proprietor gave him the sum of N400,000 as a reward.
The young tricycle driver told our correspondent in an exclusive interview at their home that while some people have praised him for the integrity he has shown, some of his friends have said he is crazy for returning the money.
Some people, he claims, even predicted he’d never amount to much financially.
Some of my close friends are upset with me right now. But I have no issue with that at all. As far as I can tell, I have nothing to feel guilty about. People have told me I’m crazy and completely out of my mind. Some people have even told me this is my one and only chance at wealth.
People are flocking to our house to congratulate me and my parents, while others are praising and commending me for what I did. He then said, “I thank God Almighty for that.
