Naira note: PDP Senatorial candidate calls for arrest of El-rufai

Owerri- The Imo East Senatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Uche Onyeagocha, on Monday called for the arrest of the governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-rufai.

Onyeagocha, made this demand in a statement to newsmen in Owerri, on the issue of the controversy that has trailed the redesigning of the old naira note.

He said that El-rufai’s opposition to the redesigning of the old naira note policy was against the directive of the president. Therefore, it was capable of truncating the nation’s democracy and enthroning anarchy. He alleged the Kaduna state governor has committed treason.

However, Onyegocha said that he also has a reservation about the redesigning of the old naira note.

Onyeagocha through his Special Assistant on Media, MacDonald Enwere,

said: “The PDP Candidate for Imo East Senatorial District in the forthcoming National Assembly election, Hon. Barr Uche Onyeagocha has called for the immediate arrest of Kaduna state Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai over his recent inciting comments against the Naira redesign policy of the federal government.

“Recently, Governor El-Rufai called on Nigerians to resist the directive of the federal government and continue to use the old naira currency as a legal tender. This was against the directive of the federal government. Unfortunately, a governor of a state like Nasir El-Rufai could incite the masses against the fiscal policy of the federal government. Governor El-Rufai should know that it is only the Central Bank of Nigeria that has the constitutional powers to determine and issue currency notes as legal tender.

“Hon Onyeagocha notes that even though he has reservations about design policy but inciting the people against the federal government and its policy is an act capable of truncating the nation’s democracy.”

“Governor Nasir El- Rurufai’s action constitutes treason and he should be immediately arrested alongside other Governors that are joining him in making such inciting statements against the federal government. They should not be allowed to truncate the nation’s democratic process because of their political interests,” he insisted.
