Seven years after manhunt kingpin nabbed

Arrested in Nteje, Oyi local government area of Anambra State, Mathew Edozieuno Nwankwo member of a notorious kidnap gang has been arrested.

 

The kidnap kingpin, who has been at large

since 2015, had been terrorizing the state during the regime of former Governor Willie Obiano.

 

When his gang members were arrested, the suspect, who fled the state reportedly reappeared in the state. With the assumption that he could enjoy safe heaven since the regime had passed.

 

His house was demolished together with that of his gang members at Nteje and Umueri respectively while he was on the run.

 

Leader of the team that carried out the demolition, Asst Police Commissioner Joseph Agugoesi who listed other gang members as Mr Solomon Morah, aka Mmili and Hyacinth Chibudu said their houses were also demolished.

 

“The gang members have been ripping off money as ransom to the tune of about #70 million from their victims before they were arrested,” he said.

 

The Nation gathered that the suspect was arrested at his country home by officers of the State Police Command at the wee hours of Tuesday following a tip off.

 

Confirming the arrest on Wednesday, Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga said the suspect is currently in police custody, while investigations were ongoing.

 

He however said that it would be too hasty to make public the preliminary findings so as not to jeopardize investigations.

 

“The suspect(Matthew Cyril Nwankwo)is in custody and further development shall be completed”, he said.
