I see the facts and I agree.” The Anambra State government then announced that Obi’s government had secured eight loans and the workers at the state-owned water business were owed salaries and arrears, Okonkwo added. “The truth is the Anambra State government said he took eight loans. The fact is Anambra State said at the water company he was owing the workers there all the pay, all the arrears. “I cannot say the same thing I said about Peter Obi in 2023,” he remarked. The statements are coming after a running battle between Obi and the Anambra State Government over the state’s debt profile and financial responsibilities left by past administrations. Hire the Grant Writers The dispute was triggered by statement of the state’s Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor that Anambra was still servicing loans contracted by past governments including Obi’s and that of former Governor Willie Obiano. Obi later denied the claim, insisting he exited office without any outstanding debt. He also stated his administration left no debts in salary, pensions and contractors while handing over control and put N2.1 billion in an ecological fund for the state. But the state government denied the charges, stating Obi left $123.77 million in debt when he left office. It also said it had no evidence of the ecological fund the former governor had mentioned. The government eventually provided paperwork on N363.38 million wage arrears it stated was inherited from the Obi administration. Hire Grant Writers. Okonkwo also claimed to have previously defended Obi’s family against allegations that a wristwatch reportedly worn by a son of President Bola Tinubu was too expensive. “They discovered that Tinubu’s son was wearing a watch of up to N135 million. There was a time. I went on television and I said no one from Peter Obi’s family can ever wear such a thing when people are dying in poverty. I’ll bet my reputation on it. “Can I say that today?” Okonkwo explained the shift in his approach, noting that his position in vetting Obi would be different in the 2027 election.
