The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its stance on the absolute obedience to safety rules on the highways, saying that defaulters of such would henceforth be dealt with in accordance with the rule of laws from 2022.
A statement by Mr. Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC said that the corps observed that some motorists consistently disobey the speed limit devices in their vehicles, thereby leading to avoidable road crashes, but vowed that such flagrant disobedience won’t be tolerated from 2022.
The statement hinted that Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal, FRSC, expressed disgust at the disobedience to safety rules, thereby leading to increased accident rates in the country.
He, however, observed that fatal crashes on the highways reduced in the last Christmas celebration and mentioned over-speeding as one of the causal factors of accidents on the road.
He explained that accidents as a result of over-speeding compelled the corps to introduce speed limits on vehicles and enjoined motorists to obey the laws to the letter.
He said: “The discovery that some Nigerians are still flouting the law on the use of speed limiting devices in their vehicles resulting in the upsurge in speed-related crashes was unfortunate. But such flagrant disobedience to traffic safety rules would no longer be condoned in the New Year as enforcement would be total and unwavering.”
Oyeyemi commended all the stakeholders that joined the road safety campaigns during the festive periods to make the roads safer, adding that road safety remained a shared responsibility, which no single organisation could tackle all alone without the support and collaboration of relevant stakeholders.
He particularly expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for rendering all necessary moral and logistics support for the success of the campaigns in the outgoing year.
