BIM-MASSOB alleges death of member in police cell
The Biafra Independent Movement and Movement for the Actualization Of Sovereign State Of Biafra (BIM/MASSOB) has alleged the death of their member in the police cell in Onitsha.
The member, Ikechukwu Ajah was said to have been arrested on Sunday, March 21 along Obodoukwu Road, Nkutaku in the Ogbaru Local Council area for allegedly wearing a T-shirt with the inscription ‘United States of Biafra’.
Since then, according to the group’s chief welfare officer for Anambra North Kenneth Aririka, Ajah had been detained without trial at the area command’s headquarters, Onitsha and members of his group were not allowed to see him.
According information at his disposal was that Ajah died of severe torture inflicted on him by the police while trying to force him to admit that he was a membership of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB).
He said: “Ajah has been detained without trial at the area command’s headquarters, Onitsha.
Tension is brewing in Onitsha among the members of Chief Ralph Uwazuruike-led Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (BIM-MASSOB) following the rumoured death of Ikechukwu Ajah, in police custody in Onitsha, Anambra- state.
“Several attempts made by his counsel and relatives of the detained BIM- MASSOB member at the central police station, CPS, Onitsha, with a view to securing his bail yielded no results.
“Policemen prevented us from seeing our member who had been kept incommunicado since March 21.
“We got to Area commander for Onitsha, John Obuagbuaka but he ignored our team who visited his office.”
Biafra director of information and senior special assistant to president of internal government, Elder Chris Mocha in a telephone interview demanded that to prove that Ajah is still alive, he should be released immediately.
Mocha said Mr. Ajah is a member of the internationally recognized non – violent organization that is campaigning for Biafra through peaceful means and does not believe in violent agitation.
He wondered why the police had chosen to torture Mr. Ajah to death even after it was clearly established to the commissioner of police that he belonged to Uwazuruike’s BIM-MASSOB.
Inquiries put to the state police spokesman, Ikenga Tochukwu was not responded to. (Daily Independent)
