The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Alumni Association has appealed to the kidnappers of Dr. Jones Ayuwo of the Department of Linguistics and Communications Studies of the university to release him unconditionally.

Dr Ayuwo, an alumnus of UNIPORT and a very active member of the alumni association, was abducted on Sunday night, February 21, 2021, while on his way back to Port Harcourt from Andoni in relation to the translation of the Holy Bible into the Andoni Language.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National President of the association, Barr. Chris Adokeme, said “as a dedicated academic, the lecturer was on a patriotic assignment to expand the frontiers of knowledge, and deserves to be treated better.”

He explained that “as a salaried employee of the University of Port Harcourt, dedicated to the dispensation of knowledge, Dr. Ayuwo is not in a position to pay any ransom for his release.” Adokeme, therefore, called on the security agencies in the state go the extra mile in ensuring Ayuwo’s immediate release and return to his family.

He expressed solidarity with the lecturer’s family and assured that “the alumni family is with them in this most difficult period.”
