Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed sentenced to 10 years jail for illegal funding of 2 terror cases
Mumbai terror attack mastermind and Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) leader Hafiz Saeed was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Thursday by a Pakistani anti-terrorism court in two more terror cases.
Designated by the United Nations terrorist, with a $10 million bounty by the US, Saeed is currently lodged at the high-security Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore after getting arrested on July 17 last year. He was charged in two terror financing cases this February and sentenced to jail for 11 years by an anti-terrorism court.
“The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of Lahore on Thursday sentenced four leaders of Jamat-ud-Dawa, including its chief Hafiz Saeed, in two more cases,” a court official said.
Saeed, along with his two close aides namely Zafar Iqbal and Yahya Mujahid, will serve jail terms for 10 and a half years, while his brother-in-law Abdul Rehman Makki was awarded a six-month term.
“Judge Arshad Hussain Bhutta of ATC Court No. 1 heard the case No. 16/19 and 25/19 filed by Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) in which the verdict has been announced after the statements of witnesses were cross-examined by Naseeruddin Nayyar and Mohammad Imran Fazal Gul Advocate,” said the official.
The CTD has registered 41 cases against the leaders of the terror group, among which 24 have been decided and the others are pending at the ATC. Out of the 24, four cases so far have been decided against the JuD chief.
Saeed-operated JuD is the front agency for the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), the organisation responsible for the 2008 Mumbai terror attack that killed 166 people, including six Americans. (Agency report)
