Algeria confirms first coronavirus death

Algeria has registered its first coronavirus death, state radio reported on Thursday.

It did not report any increase in the 20 cases confirmed there so far, mostly in the town of Blida.

Algeria said this week it would ban economic, social and political gatherings, though it is not clear if this will include weekly mass protests that have convulsed the capital for a year, reports Reuters.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s health ministry on Thursday reported the first case of local transmission of the coronavirus, saying a 32-year-old man had contracted it after coming into contact with a Chinese businessman.

“All others (cases) have been by patients who had travelled abroad,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the number of confirmed cases had risen to 17 from 13 on Wednesday. (Reuters)
