Kano State House of Assembly has launched a fresh investigation against Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi ll over alleged violation of cultural and norms of Hausa tribe.

At Wednesday’s plenary, the House received two petitions against the emir. The petitions were from Kano State Society for Promotion of Education and Culture and an individual.

Efforts to get reaction from the Kano Emirate Council proved abortive as at the time of filing this report. The two petitions were signed by Muhammad Bello Abdullahi and Muhammad Mukhtar Ja’in Yamma respectively.

The petitioners, who backed their petitions with video CDs, demanded the house to investigate the emir’s attitudes which they alleged contradict the Hausa norms and values.

The House referred the petitions to the 8-man House Standing Committee on Public Complaints and Petition and mandated it to study the content of the petitions and report back to the house within one week.

Shortly after the committee was ordered to commence the investigation, a member representing Dala Constituency, Lawal Hussain (PDP), suggested that the content of the petition should be read in public.

However, the Speaker briefly explained to him that according to the section 3, sub-section (b) of the House Rule, there was no need for further explanation of such petition in public.

“We have given our committee the go ahead to go through the petitions, look into the issues and report back to the House for further deliberations on the issue,” he said

The Committee, which the Deputy Speaker of the House, Engr. Hamisu Chidari was co-opted to lead the investigation, was given one week within which to present its report to the House.

Also, the Majority leader, Kabiru Hasaan and the Chief Whip of the assembly, Labaran Ayuba were added as supporting members of the committee.

This is not the first time the House is probing the Emir. In 2017, the state lawmakers launched an investigation against the Emir over alleged abuse of office and improper conduct.

The House constituted a committee to probe the Emir following a motion by Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmad Gama, Nassarawa Constituency.

Some of the allegations against the Emir were: Accusing the state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the state legislators of mismanaging state resources while on an official visit to China.

Making remarks in Kaduna on the proposed Kano light rail project which had tarnished his (Gama) image, the government and the assembly as well.

Making remarks in Kaduna on the proposed Kano light rail project which had tarnished his (Gama) image, the government and the assembly as well.

Intentionally attacking President Muhammadu Buhari whenever he got an opportunity to speak at a public gathering. He said this had contravened the culture of traditional institution.

Embezzlement of funds belonging to the emirate council.

Tarnishing the image of the emirate by assigning his daughter to represent him at a public function, introducing strange religious issues and involvement in politics.

The Emir is also being investigated by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission over alleged sale of landed properties belonging to the Kano Emirate Council, according to an exclusive story published by in January.

Meanwhile a Federal High Court in Kano recently quashed the preliminary report by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission seeking the suspension of the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi ll.

In his judgement, Justice O. A. Egwuatu averred that the commission had not given the emir an opportunity to be heard before issuing a damning report on him. He declared that such an omission was against the principle of fair hearing, hence the report could not stand.

The judge also ruled that the emir should be paid N200, 000.00. (Daily Trust)
