Katsina Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Jibril Zarewa has announced the conversion of 1,750 voting points in the State to polling units after wide consultations.
Zarewa, who addressed stakeholders meeting at INEC headquarters, Katsina, which also involved political parties and civil societies organisations, said the conversion resulted led to the creation of additional 4,902 polling units.
He said: “Katsina with 4,902 polling units has an additional 1,750, making it a total of 6,652. It should also be noted that the 4,902 created in 1996 will remain in their known locations.
“With the exception of three polling centers in Danja, the one in Dutsi Local Government Areas was moved to other polling units to appropriate locations.”
The INEC chief further revealed it is the duty of every registered voter to initiate his/her transfer to one of the new polling units as the commission had not moved any person under the continuous voter registration exercise.
Zarewa reminded the stakeholders that voter registration has commenced on June 28 nationwide, urging politicians and stakeholders to encourage members of their families to troop out en mass to participate in the exercise.
He said the exercise is targeted at giving those who had attained 18 the opportunity to register and exercise their franchise whenever the need arises. (The Nation)
