The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abutu Yaro, has threatened to transfer any Divisional Police Officer (DPO) whose Division has pronounced cases of corruption.

Addressing DPOs and sectional heads of Chaplaincy and X-Squad on Monday at the Police Headquarter, Owerri, Mr. Yaro said he “will soon be on live radio to advise citizens not to give bribe to any policeman I with tell the callers to identify any policeman and the station where money was extorted.”

He also told the DPOs: “Just be lucky that your Division is not mentioned. Once l establish that corruption is the order of the day in your Division l will dissolve your Division and transfer everybody out from that Division.”

The CP noted that if the men in the Division know that the DPO is corrupt they too will be corrupt and boldly say “go and report me to the DPO and nothing will happen” because they will believe that once the DPO is corrupt the Commissioner of Police may be corrupt.

Mr. Yaro cited three states where the junior officers do not intimidate the citizens for corruption but lamented that “here in Owerri, it is different. I will not tolerate corruption here.”

He finally tasked heads of Chaplaincy to use the Bible and the Quran to preach against corruption, adding: “When you place the Bible or the Quran on the table whoever wants to give bribe will be cautious,” he noted.
