South Africa asks Interpol to help arrest Gupta family members

South Africa has asked Interpol to help arrest some members of the Gupta family who have been linked to corruption allegations during the presidency of Jacob Zuma.

Those allegations were at the centre of a scandal known in South Africa as “state capture”.

Gupta family members were accused of bribing politicians to advance their business.

The Guptas have repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

South Africa has asked Interpol with help in detaining:

They are wanted in connection with a procurement fraud scheme amounting to $1.8m (£1.25m) involving the diversion of money earmarked for rural development.

The Gupta family members are reportedly living in the United Arab Emirates.

The Investigating Directorate (ID) of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has issued arrest warrants for Gupta brothers, Atul and Rajesh, and their wives, Chetali and Arti, as well as a number of business associates.

The head, Hermione Cronje asked Interpol to circulate the Red Notice international arrest warrant to have the Guptas deported to South Africa to stand trial for fraud and money laundering.

The ID wants to try the Guptas in connection with R25 million spent on a feasibility study to determine the viability of the failed Estina dairy farm in Vrede in the Free State. The Gupta brothers, close friends and associates of former president Jacob Zuma, fled the country in 2018 and are reportedly in the United Arab Emirates.
