OccupyNASS2: CSOs threaten to paralyze legislative activities over non-passage of Electoral Act

The coalition of Civil Society Organisations under the aegis of Alliance of Civil Society Organisations for Expansion of Electoral and Democratic Space (ACCESS), on Tuesday, threatened to paralyze legislative activities at the National Assembly over undue delay in the passage of the electoral (amendment) bill.
The coalition’s statement was co-signed by leaders of the coalition, namely: Ariyo-Dare Atoye – Center For Liberty; Ayo Ademiluyi – Movement for Socialist Alternative; Princess Hamman-Obels – The Electoral Hub; Simi Olusola – Aspilos Foundation and Jude Feranmi – Raising New Voices, who stressed the need for digitalisation of the electoral process.
While urging the Senate to prioritize the passage of the bill, the coalition observed that “only passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) bill can renew confidence in the constitutional review process.
We are aware of the resumption of the upper house of the National Assembly (the Senate) from recess and after the Public Hearings on constitutional review across the zones.
“We are of the firm view that the most important and urgent business before the Senate is to conduct the passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill into law.
“We are also of the view that the only way the Senate can assure the vast majority of Nigerians of the genuineness of her Constitutional Review processes is to carry out the passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
“This is due to the fact that the Senate signposts electoral reforms as one of the cardinal points of her Constitutional Review.
“We are also concerned with the ongoing arson and destruction of the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which is casting doubts already on the 2023 general elections.
“We are of the view that the passage of Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill remains the panacea for this ugly developing situation.
“This is more or less based on the fact that the Bill contains fresh provisions for digitalisation of the electoral process.
“We hereby give notice that if both houses of the National Assembly (the Senate and the House of Representatives) continue their reluctance to the question of passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, we will be left with no choice than to activate #OccupyNASS2 to push our demands.” (Nigerian Tribune)
