NUC accreditation panels visit Plateau university, accredit 3 courses

Management, staff and students of Plateau State University Bokkos were highly elated and expectant as a team of accreditation panels from the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) arrived the school on Friday.

The eight-man Panel of NUC is in the school to for the assessment of three programmes for re- accreditation.

Mr John Agams, Public Relation Officer of the University who disclosed the visit of the NUC team in a statement, noted that the team will examine Mass Communication, Geography and Biochemistry programmes during the visit.

The statement said: “The panels were received on a courtesy call by the Vice Chancellor Professor Yohana Daniel Izam and Management of the University before proceeding for the accreditation exercise.”

The statement quoted the VC of saying: “The visit is a peer review exercise aimed at promoting academic excellence, quality assurance and health status of programs being undertaken for better results and acceptances”

Representative of the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Mrs. Ukaego Maureen, told the Vice Chancellor that the exercise is a quality assurance mechanism to ensure that the University’s programs meet global best standards that would produce graduates that are competent and can compare favorably with their counterparts from other universities.

Speaking on behalf of the panels, Chairman of the Geography team, Professor Philip Phil- Eze from the University of Nigeria Nsukka said the essence of their coming is not to intimidate the university but to look at the programmes objectively without compromising the established threshold.

Other members of the two Panels include, Professor Mala Galadima, from Adama Modibo University, Yola, Professor Adedeji Aderemi, from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Umar Lapai representing the National Universities Commission.

The Biochemistry Panel has Professor Femi Agboola from Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife as Chairman, with Professor Muntari Bala from Bayero University, Kano, Professor James Omale, Kogi State University and Mrs Ukaego Maureen the representative of the National Universities Commission as members.

The three programmes undergoing re-examination are Biochemistry, Geography and Mass Communication which had interim accreditations during NUCs visit in 2018.
