Kano court halts debate between Abduljabbar and Ulama

A Kano magistrate’s court has halted the debate between Sheik Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara and the Ulama’ (Muslim scholars).
In a ruling on Friday, the court asked all parties in the case between the Kano state government and the Sheik to obey its existing order.
The court had earlier banned the Sheikh from preaching and airing his teaching, pending the determination of the matter before it.
At its resumed sitting on Friday, a twist was added to the case when a lawyer, Barrister Ma’aruf Yakasai. approached the court with a motion on notice showing his intention to be joined in the matter.
His counsel, Barrister Lukman Abdullahi, told the court that his client being a bonafide citizen of Kano and affected by the matter will want to joined in the case and have filed an application to that effect.
He argued that the proposed debate is a contempt of court because there is an already existing order banning Abduljabbar from public preaching and airing of his activities.
In his ruling, Magistrate Muhammad Jibril told the parties to maintain all the existing status quo earlier issued and adjourned the matter to March 22 for continuation.
Speaking on the matter, the state’s commissioner of justice, Musa Lawal, said as a law abiding government it would abide by the court ruling.
Daily Trust reports that March 7 was fixed for the debate which was to hold at the palace of the Emir of Kano. (Daily Trust)
