Telecom subscribers face fresh hurdle in NIN confirmation

As telecommunications subscribers continue to grapple with the hassles of registering for their National Identification Number (NIN), there are palpable fears among most of them who have been trying to see that their numbers are successfully linked with their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards.

Many subscribers who have registered their NIN through codes issued by telecommunications companies were yet to receive positive responses indicating that the verification was successful.

Rather, they keep sending texts to remind the subscribers to send their NIN to avoid their SIM cards being blocked.

A subscriber, who received a text from Airtel warning him to register his NIN to avoid being blocked, expressed worries over the development.

“I hope they would not disconnect people after the deadline, because I have sent them all the required details for the integration of my SIM,” he said.

According to him, he kept getting a text message which read: “Avoid getting blocked!!! SMS start to 121 to submit your NIN verification and link with your airtel numbers today! You can get your NIN by dialing *346#. Thank you.”

In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people who are mostly network subscribers have continued to besiege centres where NIN registration takes place.

Last week, based on allegations of extortion and corruption, the Federal Government ordered the suspension of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) staff involved in fleecing NIN applicants. (Daily Independent)
