24,416 students jostle for admission into 110 Unity Colleges
About 24,416 students who made the 142 cut-off marks at the just concluded National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) are jostling for admission into the 110 Federal Government Unity Colleges (FUCs).
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2020 selection and placement exercise for qualified candidates in Kano, the Minister of State, Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said 60 percent of this year’s admission into the colleges shall be on merit.
According to him, thirty percent shall be on equality just as ten percent is allocated for exigencies.
He said “the decision to place greater emphasis on merit is based in the interest of the nation.”
“The ministry’s decision to upload the admission list for successful candidates under the sixty percent national merit and thirty percent equality of states within 72 hours of the release of the 2020 NCEE result is to ensure credibility and douse tension in the society, regarding the admission into the FUCs,” he added.
In his remarks, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Sonny Echono, said six new science, technology and vocational education schools had been established to provide more opportunities irrespective of parental background status.
