Tension in Enugu as protesters block road, destroy vehicles

Angry protesters on Wednesday took over some areas in Enugu metropolis burning tyres in supposedly in continuation of the nationwide #ENDSARS protest.

It was gathered that the protesters who came out in their numbers blocked Abakpa, Nike and Liberty Road around Nowas area in the metropolis and set tyres on fire on major roads.

The situation caused fear and pandemic in the area as residents and business owners scampered for safety.

It was also learnt that business owners and banks around Ogui Road and Okpara Avenue among others have closed for fear of being attack.

Our correspondent who went round the town reports that military personnel have taken over the popular Okpara Square where the #ENDSARS protesters usually gather every morning as no protester was seen around the area which is close to Government House.

A resident of Transekulu area, Mr Joseph Ogbu told our correspondent that no vehicle was allowed to pass through Trans Ekulu, Abakpa and Nike Area as the Road were all blocked and flames of fire covered the whole area.

He said “I was in my office when I saw people running helter scatter and immediately we came out, we saw the protesters comming towards our office so we hurriedly close office.

“We were told that the angry protesters are currently destroying vehicles and people shops around Nike area.

“The situation is becoming worst, Government need to act very fast to avert blood shed in the state. Only God will safe us because with the situation now, we can’t sleep with our two eyes close again.

Also, a trader at Ogui Road, Nkechi Onu said she was in her shop when they got the news of what was happening in Abakpa and they hurriedly close their shops.

“Even though the protesters are yet to get to our area but we need to stay safe in order not to fall victim of their attack so that’s why we closed our shops’ she said. (Daily Independent)
