The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in collaboration with operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have uncovered and sealed an illegal refinery allegedly operated by Chinese nationals in Ogere-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The discovery came after an intelligence-led operation, which revealed a strongly guarded compound spanning more than three hectares of ground that investigators said was rudimentary yet technically advanced.
In a joint examination, officials found underground tanks suspected to be used for heating and processing sludge oil, refining waste and chemicals suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), generally known as diesel.
The inspection team also discovered subterranean storage facilities, locally made tanks, silos and other equipment reportedly used in the processing and separation of petroleum products.
The Ogun State Coordinator of NMDPRA, Dr Atilola Akinyemi, while speaking with press after the operation, said the facility was an illegal operation, saying the facility had no approval and operating permit from any recognised regulatory authority.
He said that the underground storage facility behind the refinery has an estimated capacity of over 90,000 litres and was supplied with underground heating systems and water hydrants for cooling operations.
He cautioned that the supply of falsified petroleum products from such units could jeopardise the vehicles and engines seriously, inflicting widespread mechanical harm.
The Federal Government has seized all the products recovered from the facility, while the regulatory authority has sealed the premises to prevent further illegal activity, he said.
Also speaking, the Director, Department of Proceeds of Crime Management, EFCC, Mr Gbolahan Latona, appealed to Nigerians to show patriotism and support collective efforts to preserve the country’s economic interests.
Latona said the investigations into the operations at the facility will be concluded before the suspects are taken before a competent court for prosecution.
He said that recoveries from illicit acts would be put into useful use for national development.
The operation reflects ongoing efforts by regulatory and law enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal petroleum refining, protect consumers and preserve Nigeria’s oil and gas industry from economic sabotage.
