The killing of a retired teacher in Abeokuta, Ogun State remained a troubling mystery for eight months. The 61-year-old woman was found dead in the bathroom of her own home, a day after celebrating her retirement with former coworkers.
Now, officials claim they’ve apprehended a man who admitted to the killing and have released details of what happened on the nite of the murder and how a misplaced phone helped them track him down.
The victim, Mrs Adedotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, was popularly known as Mama Teacher. She was slain at her Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude home in Abeokuta, on Friday, February 27, 2026.
Her body was found the following day, February 28, in the toilet of her home.
What makes the case more unsettling is the rationale given by the suspect for the attack. He said their dispute was over millions of naira he gave the retired teacher in trust and her pledge to offer him more money to buy a car.
But the quarrel over the money ended in a fatal machete assault.
The Nite Everything Went Wrong
The Ogun State Police Command said that the main suspect, one Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly known as Oki-Ocean, was apprehended on October 19, 2026 after an investigation.
DAILY POST received a confessional video in which Ayinde told how he went to the apartment of Mama Teacher on the evening of February 27 to ask for explanation regarding his money.
He said he gave her N3.45 million to keep for him. The retired instructor also agreed to finance him another ₦1.55million which would bring the total to ₦5million and enable him to buy a vehicle, he said.
Ayinde said he had queried her on several occasions about the money but was not happy with her answers.
That day about 6 p.m. he came to her house to settle the issue.
According to him, their conversation soon took a turn for the worse as he asked her to pay him back his money if she wasn’t prepared to provide him the extra loan.
He stated Mama Teacher got angry and told him to leave her flat, saying that she would yell at him.
Ayinde said he reminded her of their pact, but the quarrel continued.
What transpired next would convert a dispute about money into a murder case.
How the Argument Became Violent
The suspect confessed Mama Teacher walked toward the toilet during the confrontation. He stated he followed her there, and saw a cutlass on the floor.
He grabbed up the gun and kept asking for his money.
“I attacked her with the cutlass as she was trying to come out, pulling her back,” Ayinde admitted.
He alleged he hit her in the neck, hand and thighs before she fell.
He added that he picked her up and placed her on the toilet seat.
The report gives a horrifying rationale for the violence that preceded the discovery of the retired teacher’s body the next day.
But the full facts of the killing have to be established in the end, through the police investigation and judicial proceedings, including the forensic evidence and other discoveries collected by investigators.
What the Suspect Did After the Assault
Ayinde also narrated what he did immediately after the assault.
“A neighbour was out and he was worried he might be seen,” he said. He told us that he stayed in the house a little while, then went into the parlour and sat down.
The victim was still trying to talk after the incident, he said.
The suspect claimed investigators he later regretted his actions and was still haunted by the tragedy. He said he never told anybody about the incident.
But there was one more aspect in his confession that would become important to the investigation.
Mama Teacher’s mobile phone had no password and I took it,” Ayinde said.
That decision would eventually help detectives tie him to the crime.
The phone that called the police to the suspect
The body of the retired teacher was found and the investigation lasted for months.
The case was first handled in the Bode-Olude Division before it was transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, at Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The Ogun State Police Command said detectives were still trying to ascertain the facts of the homicide and arrest the person behind it.
The insight came from looking at the victim’s stolen phone.
Police spokeswoman DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi said police traced the device and the information gathered was used to link the probe to Ayinde.
That trail eventually led to his arrest on Oct. 19, almost eight months after the crime.
Police have not released details of each stage of the phone-tracking operation but the device has been described as a vital lead in locating the culprit.
Police Get Ready for Trial
The Ogun State Police Command said the suspect would be charged to court after the detectives had done the needful and cleared the facts of the case.
CP Bode Ojajuni, the Commissioner of Police, praised the officers involved in the inquiry for their dedication and professionalism.
The command also appealed to locals to be conscious of their personal security and handle people with delicate issues with prudence.
The police also urged the people from taking the law into their own hands stressing that conflicts should be settled by lawful ways and not through violence.
A Tragedy Rooted in a Money Fight
The death of Mama Teacher shows how a dispute over money may turn into violence with no going back.
According to Ayinde’s version of the story, the argument was over ₦3.45million he said he gave the retired teacher and another ₦1.55million she promised to give him.
But no financial dispute can excuse taking another person’s life.
The suspect is currently in prison and the next stage of the case will be the conclusion of the investigations and the court processes, when the evidence will be evaluated and the allegations tested.
The arrest might be a major development for Mama Teacher’s family and others who knew her, following months of uncertainty. But the courts will have to deal with the questions of her last moments, the evidence collected by detectives and the exact circumstances of the killing.
An arrest and confession was the result of the investigation. But the court is the one to finally determine criminal liability.
