English clubs had mixed results in Europe on Thursday with Bournemouth claiming a stunning 3-0 win over AC Milan in the UEFA Europa League and Crystal Palace being held to a 2-2 draw by Besiktas in Istanbul
Bournemouth capitalised on Milan’s numerical inferiority to claim their third straight Europa League group stage victory, cementing their place among the competition’s early frontrunners.
Justin Kluivert got a penalty in the eighth minute when Milan defender Koni De Winter handled the ball. The visitors were much hampered when goalkeeper Mike Maignan was sent off for pushing Bournemouth player Tyler Adams in the face in a corner-kick incident in the 27th minute.
Then, in the 32nd, Marcus Tavernier slotted home from the spot to increase Bournemouth’s lead and leave Milan with a two-goal deficit to undo and 10 men. The Italians found it difficult to get back into the fight, although they tried to improve after the half.
Substitute Amine Adli sealed the win with a wonderful free kick in the 84th minute to cap a fine display by the English side against the seven-time European winners.
The result maintained Bournemouth’s flawless start to their maiden European campaign with manager Marco Rose’s side taking nine points from their opening three games. It was a tough nite on the south coast of England for Milan under Ruben Amorim and they were left to pick up the pieces.
Crystal Palace, meanwhile, had to make do with a point after squandering their lead in an entertaining 2-2 draw with Besiktas in Turkey.
The Turkish hosts took the lead in first half stoppage time through Nigerian midfielder Wilfred Ndidi but Palace hit back with two quickfire goals after the interval. Yeremy Pino levelled in the 51st minute before Jean-Philippe Mateta put the visitors ahead four minutes later.
Beşiktaş equalised in the 73rd minute with replacement Junior Olaitan. The hosts were then reduced to ten men after Ümit Akdağ was sent off for a challenge on Jørgen Strand Larsen but Palace could not score a late winner.
The draw broke Palace’s two-game losing record and offered some encouragement after their crushing 5-0 setback to Brighton in the Premier League. But manager Pierre Sage was frustrated his team did not turn their performance into a win.
Elsewhere in the Europa League, Juventus were held to a 2-2 draw by Rennes, while Sunderland drew 1-1 with Lech Poznań. Bayer Leverkusen overcame OFI Crete 2-0, Benfica beat Omonia 4-1 and Real Sociedad enjoyed an easy 6-0 win over Lillestrøm.
Brighton drew 0-0 with Czech side Jablonec in the UEFA Conference League while Hearts lost 2-0 at Trabzonspor. Monaco defeated Freiburg 3-0 while Ajax defeated Atalanta 2-0.
The European tournaments return for their next league-phase games on November 5 when Bournemouth visit Sparta Prague and Crystal Palace entertain Hoffenheim in the Europa League. Brighton are slated to face Getafe in the Conference League on November 26.
