The G100 Coalition has said that opposition leaders affiliated to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Social Democratic Party (SDP) and other political platforms have made substantial progress toward producing a consensus presidential candidate to face President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election. The Guardian reports that the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Peter Agada, gave a fillip to the arrangement, saying he is waiting for a call from NDC’s Peter Obi and ADC’s Atiku Abubakar, stressing his readiness to work with either or both opposition figures, as long as they are on the same page with his plans for the country.
The coalition also opened the legal and media committees in Abuja yesterday to give a framework for talks between the parties and their major presidential candidates, among them Atiku, Obi, Donald Duke of the PRP and Adewale Adebayo of the SDP. The coalition expressed optimism.
The event was conducted by the Chairman of the G100 Coalition, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, who said that talks involving party leaders and presidential candidates had progressed and he was optimistic that lingering concerns would be resolved by the presidential election slated for January 16, 2027.
“We are making very good progress toward presenting a candidate that can defeat APC and form the next government,” he stated.
Chairsmen and representatives of the ADC, NDC, PRP, SDP, Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were at the conference.
Gombe said the committees’ inauguration was a conscious effort to put the political aims of the alliance into an organised mechanism that might maintain negotiations and overcome possible barriers to an agreement.
“Today we move from intention to structure, purposefully. “The work of this coalition will be judged not only by the strength of our convictions, but by the discipline, precision and unity with which we carry it out,” he stated.
As agreed, the legal committee consisting of national legal advisers of the interested parties and other senior legal experts would study the legal and constitutional consequences of the proposed alliance.
It is tasked with assessing the current legal problems faced by the parties, reviewing the activities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the light of the relevant judgements of the Supreme Court and advising the coalition on its legitimate choices.
The committee also will analyse working-group materials and negotiated agreements, to identify potential legal risks, and offer safeguards, and establish dispute-resolution mechanisms before any coalition agreement is implemented.
Gombe cautioned members not to disregard legal matters which could undermine the negotiations.
We can’t have surprises. “One forgotten clause can undo months of honest negotiation,” he added, calling on members to show diligence, candour and independent judgement.
The media and publicity committee, which is made up of national publicity secretaries and presidential campaign councils of participating parties’ spokespersons, aims to coordinate joint messaging, media engagements and public pronouncements.
Agada, who was being questioned on Arise Television’s Morning Show yesterday, said he was aiming for between two million and 10 million votes.
We are talking about between two to 10 million Nigerians. We are working still. “I said two million because that’s where we are right now and going pretty fast,” he remarked.
The YPP candidate who emerged 60 days ago said he had gained support through groundwork, presentations and consultations.
He said, “Over 40 per cent of Obidients that did not move away are with me, and many other parties.” Agada, the former member of the Obidient Movement, added.
He said his political aim was to mobilise a coalition of Nigerians cutting across party lines.
“This is not about political party. “This is not about what party you belong to,” he remarked.
On the possibility of an alliance with Obi and Atiku, the YPP flag bearer said he was ready to work with them provided they shared his vision for the country.
