Some patients and hospital staff members at the P and G Hospital in Abule-Egba, Lagos State, on Saturday prevented an alleged attempt by a woman to take a newborn infant.
The PUNCH learnt yesterday that the suspect had been detained and would be arraigned at the conclusion of investigations by the Lagos State Police Command.
The suspect is said to have faked pregnancy by inserting pieces of cloth under her clothes. Another woman is reported to have posed as a person who came to help her birth.
In one of the viral films our correspondent saw yesterday, the suspect was made to sit, and pieces of material she had stuffed under her garments dropped to the floor.
As she was brought toward the seat, a man in traditional garb was observed smacking her across the face as other people questioned her.
Another popular video showed the man being held as he was forced into a car.
The Command’s spokeswoman, Abimbola Adebisi, who confirmed the event in response to an inquiry by our correspondent yesterday said the suspect was with them while efforts were on to apprehend her fleeing accomplice.
“The alleged perpetrator is in custody and the accomplice is being searched for and the case will be taken to court after the investigation is complete,” she said.
